About Gloucester Crew

Gloucester Crew is a very recently founded program. The 2008 season will be only the 7th season for Gloucester Rowing. Despite the fact that the team has only been around for several years it is consistently competitive with the highly funded High School Teams of Virginia as well as on the Naional level. In just 6 seasons Gloucester has received over 10 medals from large scale high school regattas including Stotesbury and Scholastic Rowing Nationals. In the 2007 season alone Gloucester won 3 medals from stotesbury, 2 medals from Scholastic Nationals, and 4 medals from the Virginia State Championships. Many High School Crew Programs receive huge funding and have very large budgets to supply the teams with recruiting means, new shells, and other up scale rowing Equipment. Gloucester Crew is funded partially by the school and partially by the Gloucester Rowing Association. GRA raises money for the team through once monthly all night stints at the local bingo hall. While the school pays a large portion of the general expenses such as the busing fees and gas costs, the individuals at GRA and team members are left to raise any money they can to buy any new shells, speed or stroke coach systems, or microphone systems for the boats. Gloucester rowers practice after school 5 days a week February through May from 3pm to 7:30pm. The training program is rigorous and requires a strong dedication to the team. When April rolls around the schedule tightens even more and the team travels every saturday to either Occoquan or Mathews races to compete. Gloucester Rowers utilize many different techniques in training. The list includes Erging, running, Calisthenics(includes Push ups, Crunches, Jumpees, etc.), on the water training, as well as a variety of home grown workouts. The team has experienced great success given the circumstances it operates under. Over the past years the team has grown and will likely keep growing in future seasons. Let's Row |
